As we enter the month of April, we also are entering into the month of the diamond. But why do months have birth stones? What started this tradition of coupling a certain gem stone with a birth month?
There is no specific reason that can be pin pointed, but some believe it started in biblical times. This tradition was started when a High Priest wore a breastplate with twelve different colored gems on it—connecting the gems to the twelve months of the year and the twelve signs of the zodiac. It then became tradition to wear a different stone for each month, trading them out when the next month started. The people believed that the gems had magical powers for the person born within that specific month.
In 1912, the American National Association of Jewelers created a list of the different gems and assigning them to specific months. This list is now recognized as the official birthstone list.
